loraxrollercoasterOnce again this year, Grade 8 students participated in the ‘Wondercoaster Challenge’ which has students from across Ontario designing and building a roller coaster.  There are technical and artistic parameters for the contest.  Scores are earned and the top 4 Coaster designs from our school (2 from each category) continue on at a provincial competition at Canada’s Wonderland in the spring.  The coaster pictured here is called ‘The Lorax’ and is based on the movie of the same name.  The designers of this coaster chose this theme due to the popularity of Dr. Seuss stories around the world and the storyline of this particular book.   This coaster follows the story plot with ride designs that are intended to give riders a thrilling experience.   The coaster incorporated 4 loops, zig zags, a funnel and spiral track in its design.   It operates entirely by gravity, no mechanical assistance is allowed in its design.  It took three students (Davis, Priscilla, and Samantha), seven weeks to build and was constructed entirely at school.   The Lorax coaster won the technical portion of our school contest earning 231 784.8 points.   Three other coasters from our school will be chosen to accompany the Lorax to the Wonderland competition in May.
