Looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity? Consider becoming a Strong Start Coach!
Strong Start’s Letters, Sounds and Words is “a reading skills program designed to be implemented by volunteers who do not need to have related experience” (Strongstart.ca). Trained Coaches work one on one with students in Senior Kindergarten and Grade One for a period of ten weeks. The program uses short games and fun activities to provide repetition to help children recognize letters; their corresponding sounds; and how to build and recognize sight words. Volunteer Coaches work with each child for thirty minutes per week, following detailed activities using materials provided by the Strong Start organization. Thanks to the dedication of our Coaches, Northlake Woods is able to provide the Letters, Sounds, and Words program to several of our students each year. We need more coaches and we’d like you to join us!
Training for coaches is provided by Strong Start, with sessions beginning September 18 and running through November. Coaches must attend two short training sessions before volunteering at their schools. For more information and to sign up for training, please visit Strongstart.ca
Or, send an e-mail to NLWcouncil@yahoo.ca asking the Site Co-ordinator at NLW to contact you.
