Beginning on the first day of school, NLW is excited to be showcasing new active sidewalk spaces as the first in our efforts to promote safe walking routes to our school. School Council, along with staff, are partnering with the Region of Waterloo and the Active and Safe Routes to School committee to focus attention on safe ways for students to get to school each day. Students who can find an ‘active’ way to get to school (walking, biking, scootering and so on) benefit from increased physical activity, help reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions, and develop greater personal independence. Watch for more news and efforts this year as we partner with the Region to encourage and support student use of various forms of actively getting to school and home again, safely. Sidewalks painted with engaging and physical activities for students walking to school is the first step in helping students identify safe routes to school. Have a look or them before the first day of school and practice some routes that your child might take.
