Become a Strong Start Coach!
Strong Start’s Letters, Sounds and Words is “a reading skills program designed to be implemented by volunteers who do not need to have related experience” (Strongstart.ca). Volunteers work one on one with students in SK and Gr.1 for a period of ten weeks. The programme uses short games and fun activities to provide repetition to help children learn letters; their corresponding sounds; and how to build & recognize words. Volunteers work with each child for thirty minutes per week, following easy, step-by-step activities using materials provided by Strong Start. Thanks to the dedication of our Coaches, Northlake Woods is able to provide the Letters, Sounds, and Words programme to several of our students each year. The next session begins February 29th and we need more coaches!
Training for volunteer coaches is provided by Strong Start, with sessions beginning January 21 and running through February. Coaches must attend two short training sessions before volunteering at their schools. For more information and to sign up for training, please visit Strongstart.ca.
