As things begin to open up, we know that many people in our community are looking forward to volunteering at school events.  In preparation for this, please note that a Vulnerable Sector Police Check, completed within the last 6 months, is required for all school volunteers. You can request one from WRPS.   Potential volunteers will also need to submit a WRDSB Volunteer Application, available online at WRDSB.ca

NLW School Council has traditionally welcomed volunteers in many capacities, and we look forward to doing so again when public health conditions & ministry regulations allow. Some of the opportunities we have had in the past include:

Strong Start: Northlake Woods PS has partnered with Strong Start® to provide Letters, Sounds and Words – “a reading skills program designed to be implemented by volunteers who do not need to have related experience”.  Coaches work one on one with students for a period of ten weeks.  The program uses short games and fun activities to provide repetition to help children recognize letters; their corresponding sounds; and how to build and recognize sight words. Volunteer coaches work with each child for thirty minutes per week, following detailed activities using materials provided by the Strong Start organization. Training for coaches is provided by Strong Start.

School Committees and Special Events: This year’s committee opportunities include the School Anniversary Celebration Committee, the Outdoor Learning Committee, and Playground Investigation Committee.  Special events involve volunteers both during and outside of school hours. Opportunities could include our Used Book sale, Scholastic Book Fair, Walk to School events, Movie Nights, Game Nights, celebrations of the beginning and end of the year, and more.

Pizza Lunch Helpers: Volunteers have assisted with the delivery of pizza and milk to classrooms during the school day. Typically, volunteers may commit to one month or more at a time.
